Sheep are responsible for climate change.

Dust off the barbies people it is time for a lambfest. Organic of course.

Apparently sheep are the cause of our global warming problems. The little woolly buggers are burping tonnes of methane into our atmosphere.

… if the methane produced by Australia’s 80 million or so sheep was reduced by just 10 or 15 per cent in the next decade, it would have “a substantial and also a long-term impact on our greenhouse gas emissions.”

All those climate sceptics in the Liberal party should be rubbing their hands together with glee. It is sheep that are the problem. Not the great big polluting industries at all. We dont have to worry about reducing our emissions. We can stop calculating our carbon footprints. We can just keep on merrily consuming away

All we have to do is get rid of the sheep. Or stop them burping at least.

Now where is that mint sauce?

Not at all surprised by info supplied- over here in the UK its the cows apparently causing the methane which are responsible for the demise of the planet. Tongue in cheek post which made me laugh but point taken. Now where has my copy of animal farm gone… i thought it was the farting though not burping loll

Always worry a bit about posting comments on all things planet based as inevitably show my base line knowledge and you get all uppity with me but feeling brave tonight so commented away. Its the pain you know Tiff its sending me completely barmy tonight. Bet you can’t tell…..

so it’s sheep now? Last I heard it was the cows.

Next they’ll be blaming the Koalas. *rolls eyes*

Oh god dying of embarrassment now! Why am I saying Tiff when I mean Kim, just answered an email to Tiff and wrote that name. Now I am not sure whether I have got anyone’s names correct tonight anywhere. Digging a hole, getting in it and staying there… sorry xoxox

Yep, I always though it was cattle farting too!

But seriously, when will our governments stop wasting money on consultants, reports and the bloody ETS and just spend the money on investing in the new technologies that are already out there. Fossil fuels are running out and we need alternatives now. And trading emissions isn’t going to do anything to change the climate or reduce the pollution levels, it will just make the same people richer or poorer, depending on their position at the trough. It’s all very depressing.

So it’s only the sheep? Not also every other animal, including the human kind? Well that’s good to know.

I just discovered lamb chops this summer. They were SO GOOD that I’m afraid to try them elsewhere lest they be disappointing.

  • Ali December 7, 2009, 11:15 pm

Um, yeah. What Sharon said. We could do so much with all of those great Australian minds. We could make real changes. If only someone with real power had the guts.

Penny wise, pound foolish leaps to mind….
In the US, as in the UK, cows have copped the blame. So have bakeries, for the CO2 gas given off when bread rises.

So they should be encouraging us to consume the farting lil woolly backs by dropping the damn price on those delectable lamb chops that tempt with their come hither look highlighted by the sprig of parsley coyly placed to one side…….. *mopping up drool*

Sheep? I thought it was cows 😀 Either way, pass the bbq tongs!

  • Hyphen Mama December 10, 2009, 11:26 am

Yay, blame the sheep! Whew, that takes the pressure off the rest of us.

  • Kristin December 10, 2009, 1:36 pm

Wasn’t it the Australians that had the advertising slogan: Eat beef, you bastards! Maybe you need to dust that one back off, but for mutton.

  • Tanya December 12, 2009, 9:32 am

    yum lol

I’ve heard this theory before from various sources….like Greenpeace. I’m not sure why it would be seen as silly/ridiculous, or why it would mean that humans are off the hook.

    Maybe I’m missing the joke.

I think there are many contributors to our climate problem, and fixing them is going to take a variety of sacrifices.

I personally am grateful that we have scientists looking at a multitude of paths and solutions.

Since Koalas are sadly an endangered species,it’s unlikely that their bodily functions could cause much harm. If by some miracle, Australia suddenly has an overflow of koalas, maybe their burps would be an issue. I’m guessing though that the body types of certain animals produce a more detrimental amount of gas.

Although some right-wing climate skeptics might wrongly assume that the sheep-methane issue means they should indulge in MORE lamb and hamburgers…help rid the world of the burping animals. I think most intelligent people understand the economic concept of supply and demand. They would know the solution is to eat LESS meat and diary products.
