Sunday Selection #8

This week my daughter Veronica announced her engagement and within a matter of moments of that announcement, my inbox was full of congratulatory messages from my online friends. Thank you all very much.

It has been a busy week this week, I have been taming the chaos in my own studio as well as helping to organise the polytechnic ceramics space, down at the Art school in Hobart. I will be in at the Art School one day a week as a senior polytechnic student for all of this year and I have already started to make new friends.

As I was walking up to my studio yesterday there were a pair of yellow tailed black cockatoos in the yard. The Black Cockies are a frequent visitor to my place as I live in the hills, in the middle of a dry sclerophyll forest. What was very unusual about this visit was the fact that there were only two cockatoos, normally they are in a family group of between 7 and 11 birds.

We had to cut a tree down to make way for my studio, The Spouse, David and a friend milled the tree into timber that The Spouse is now using to make my work benches. What we couldn’t mill up, the boys cut into firewood. The black cockatoos are eating the grubs in the firewood.

One bird always acts as a sentry and keeps  a look out while the other birds feed.

Here are my photos, I hope you enjoy them.

Anyone can join in with this Photo Meme, “Sunday Selections” but I do ask that you only add your link if you are joining in with Sunday Selections, as links that are off topic or spam will be removed. Also be careful when you are adding your URL as the Mr Linky will remember your old URL and we will click onto an old post.

Here is the weekly blurb.

I take a lot of photos and most of them are just sitting around in folders on my desktop not doing anything. I thought that a dedicated post once a week would be a good way to share some of these photos that  otherwise wouldn’t be seen by anyone other than me.

I am also remarkably absent minded and I put photos into folders and think  that I will publish them later on and then then I never do.

So I  have started a photo meme that anyone can join in and play as well. The rules are so simple as to be virtually non existent.

Just add your name and URL to the Mr Linky.

Publish your photos on your blog using the “Sunday Selection” title.

Link back here to me.

Easy Peasy.

I LOVE black cockatoos, I’ve never seen one close up, only flying overhead. Lucky you to have such beautiful visitors, the shots are great, so up-close and personal.

Like gaby, I’ve only ever seen black cockatoos flying overhead. Your closeups are beautiful.
My selection this week is “husks”

  • plumtree February 27, 2011, 12:55 pm

Like! I am used only to sulphur-crested cockatoos. These are beautiful.

  • Megan February 27, 2011, 1:08 pm

Pretty bird, I like, though I have a friend who would love as she is obsessed with birds.

  • Tenille @ Help!Mum February 27, 2011, 1:10 pm

They’re amazing creatures; they make me feel I’ve been transported back to prehistoric times when they start squawking.

  • Kelly February 27, 2011, 1:12 pm

Magnificent! Great contrast between the wood, cockatoos and landscape. Well Done!

  • Wanderlust February 27, 2011, 2:13 pm

That’s interesting that the birds work together like that and take on different roles when feeding. They are beautiful.

  • Watershedd February 27, 2011, 2:43 pm

We get a few black cockies here too. Are these the same as gang gangs?I love parrots. such great characters.

  • Toni February 27, 2011, 2:47 pm

Aren’t they GORGEOUS? In NQ we used to see the big palm cockies, but here in WA we only get the white ones, and galahs of course.
    I love that last photo.

  • Kellie February 27, 2011, 3:26 pm

We used to see quite a few of these out the back window, but haven’t seen any in a while. They’ve obviously all flown to your place! Now the galahs, well that’s a different story!! Gorgeous shots!

Kim, word has it my post links to an earlier Selections when I posted images of Morocco. Apologies to everyone. My most recent pics are with the second link under my name.

  • frogpondsrock February 27, 2011, 3:43 pm

I just deleted it for you Watershedd 🙂 You have to be careful because the Mr Linky has a memory that you put the new link in every time

  • MaidInAustralia February 27, 2011, 4:31 pm

Oh I love the black cockatoo! How cheeky they look and how awesome that they are helping out by eating the grubs! xo

  • Starfish February 27, 2011, 5:12 pm

One of the main reasons I continue to rent my crappy run-down house in the trees is the bird life I get visiting me every day. I get the white cockatoos, rainbow coloured parrots, colourful finchy things, and ducks on my damn, but nothing as spectacular as your black cockatoos. I really need to come to Tassie, been on my wish list for ever….

  • BendyGirl February 27, 2011, 7:55 pm

Fab photos thanks Kim! I’d never even heard of black cockatoos, but when I was in Sydney many years ago the cockatoos there made a real impression on me. BG Xx

  • Dorothy February 27, 2011, 8:16 pm

Love these photos of the black cockatoos! I long to be in the bush. Taking small steps to get there, but it still seems to be so far away….

  • carolina February 27, 2011, 8:23 pm

I love those photos. I’d never heard of, let alone seen, a black cockatoo. They are beautiful. Imagine having such exotic (to us they are at least) in your back yard. That’s the fun of blogging in English for me. To read about and to see so many different things from different countries. LOVE it!

  • carolina February 27, 2011, 8:24 pm

I meant to type ‘creatures’ somewhere in my previous comment too. Ah well 😉

  • sharon February 27, 2011, 11:02 pm

We have seen – and heard (they’re noisy buggers when they get going!) – Baudin’s, Carnaby’s and Red-tailed Black cockies over here in our corner of WA. No Yellow-tails here though.

Our tiny blue Splendid Wrens take turns to stand guard like your cockies. Probably keeping an eye out for the blasted kookaburras!

  • Mary February 28, 2011, 7:17 am

    Cheeky looking birds there!

  • Jay February 28, 2011, 11:40 am

What great photos! I’ve never seen black cockatoos, but they’re very cute! They must use those huge beaks very delicately to get the grubs out of the wood.

Congratulations to your daughter and her intended!

  • Tanya March 1, 2011, 1:54 pm

Very cool Kim, I miss seeing the birds in the bush! All I see here are seagulls, sparrows and pidgeons. 🙁
