Sunday Selections #26

The Blurb.

I take a lot of photos and most of them are just sitting around in folders on my desktop not doing anything. I thought that a dedicated post once a week would be a good way to share some of these photos that  otherwise wouldn’t be seen by anyone other than me.

I am also remarkably absent minded and I put photos into folders and think  that I will publish them later on and then then I never do.

So I  have started a photo meme that anyone can join in and play as well. The rules are so simple as to be virtually non existent.

Just add your name and URL to the Mr Linky.

Publish your photos on your blog using the “Sunday Selections” title.

Easy Peasy.

The Photos this week are from a mix of cameras and my phone.

This is a Green Rosella, these are also known colloquially as Mountain Parrots. They are ground feeders and seed eaters. I don’t like to feed native birds because they become dependent on us for food and can quite often starve to death when we stop feeding them because they have forgotten how to forage, it only takes one generation of birds to teach their young that the bird feeder is the primary food source. These parrots eat the wheat that I feed to my ducks so I am feeding them by proxy, it is a big responsibility.

This calf wandered into my yard a year or so ago with its mother. The more damage they did to my fruit trees the tastier they started to look. Luckily I managed to track down their owner so the calves were safe. If they come back it might be a different story as I was not compensated for the damage they did to my fruit trees. So much for being a responsible neighbour.

A frog, so cute.

Taken while driving home after a long day. I was tired.

What do you think about this shot?

Love them. Love the mountain parrot – we don’t get them here. And the texture in the bark and the calf and the frog. Love them all in fact. Thanks. What is the frog sitting on? One of the water cresses?

The frog is sitting on Duck weed, it is the bane of my life and the bloody ducks wont eat it so I don’t know how it got its name. It reproduces by division and will cover an entire pond in a matter of a week or so. I am forever scooping it out so it doesn’t choke the ponds.

    That calf does look tasty.
It’s a shame about the bird feeding. You try to do the right thing, but you have to feed the ducks.
I like that charred wood photo, is that a hairy spider leg on the side of the wood?
The headlights in the fog look a little spooky.

No it is not a spider it is just a piece of bark 🙂 I always post a warning if I have any spiders lurking about on here.

These are particularly good shots – the rosella especially.

    fabulous pics…

    that calf looks rather guilty.

    • frogpondsrock July 3, 2011, 10:31 pm

And so it bloody should, it had just eaten half a cherry tree. Rotten bloody thing. Lucky I didn’t turn it into a giant barbecue 😉

Beautiful shots as always Kim. The native birds are an endless source of fascination for me. My ‘new’ bird has become a frequent visitor along with his Missus. I finally identified them as Western Spinebills, a type of honeyeater. They are feasting on my lavender and grevilleas.

PS If river is right and that is a spider’s hairy leg behind the charred wood, I for one do not need to see the rest of it!

    • frogpondsrock July 3, 2011, 10:34 pm

I have Eastern Spinebills here, I love them but they are the shyest little birds and they just flit in and quickly get a drink of nectar and flit out. They are super hard to photograph as they are so wary.

And no it isn’t a spider it is just a piece of bark 🙂

I just love your photos, Kim. They’re not only beautiful, but technically brilliant…. The rosella is very striking….

The froggy one is *definitely* my favourite! 🙂 xx

  • All Consuming aka Michelle July 5, 2011, 3:22 am

Lovely pics as usual. I like the froggy one and the charred wood best. The wood looks a bit like an African/Mayan mask. Thanks for those 🙂
