Why is the mining industry buying up the media industry?

This week mining billionaire Gina Rinehart became the largest shareholder in Fairfax, having already bought a stake in Channel Ten. But this new video reveals this move is bigger than one woman’s ambition — it’s part of a coordinated and very deliberate strategy, with climate skeptic ‘Lord’ Monckton seen here advising a room full of mining executives on how the industry must gain control of Australia’s media.

Monckton, an avowed climate skeptic and darling of the right wing says that in Australia we need to keep the news straight and fair and balanced as they do in the US with Fox news.  Anyone with even a smidgeon of intelligence, knows that Fox news is anything BUT straight or fair or balanced when it comes to the interests of ordinary people or the planet as opposed to interests of the mighty corporations.

I ask that you watch this three minute video uploaded to youtube by Get Up and that you think about the implications for our media in Australia. If Gina Rinehart has Fairfax and Rupert Murdoch has New Limited, what do we, the people of Australia have?

I’d be more scared, but I believe that mainstream media in Australia has been lost to us for years anyway. Advertising dollars own the world and corporates control the purse. x

Very very scary man. and HELLO Gina Whinehart … we aren’t oblivious as to why you are buying up news media shares.

….he mentioned Andrew Dolt … I must now go and wash out my brain.

Amanda, Jo Nova is the female equivalent of Andrew Bolt and not to be dismissed. In fact I think that she might be more of a concern than Bolt. Her Climate Change denial blog recently won the Best Aus/Nz section of the bloggies and she has a lot of support from the right. A kind benefactor has stepped in and is paying for her websites hosting fees. It is a very slick production.

Sorry to hear this. I refer to Fox news here as Fake news. I have not watched or listened for ages because it’s so obviously biased on the right wing side… and so irritating. It’s sad that we don’t have more “media literacy” to know when we are being bought and controlled like puppets.

It was interesting to see the “media blackout” in operation during the Gulf oil spill. Talking to my friends in the mid west it didn’t even rate a mention on the news after the first day or two. Friends in Florida reported that all the news broadcast was positive, whilst on twitter the news was of appalling devastation. The propaganda machine is alive and well and churning out masses of infotainment and advertorials every day.
