Clean up and Green up… WooHoo!!!!

Lotus aka Sarcastic Mom is trying to clean up her part of the world.

Here in Australia, We have the annual Clean up Australia Day which is huge.

The similarities with these two projects are also huge. Clean up Australia Day was the brainchild of one person. Ian Kiernan. Project Restore Beauty to Nature is the brainchild of one woman Lotus Carroll

I live a ‘green lifestyle’ I often forget that how I live here in my little part of the world is not actually considered normal.. and the day to day stuff that I do as part of my everyday routine would actually be considered a bit strange..

So today I have just included some photos as bit of a starter.. I would like to write a bit more about how I live and I would like to share some of the stuff that I take for granted. Simple things like using this bright yellow container in the sink when I wash the dishes.. 1. It uses heaps less water and 2. I can then tip the water onto the garden.. this photo is just for fun…

I have an organic garden. this is old horse poo. I am soaking this overnight because the manure is old and very dry.I will use this as a mulch and soil conditioner in the garden tomorrow. If I put it in the garden dry.. It would either rob the garden soil of precious moisture or it would just blow away..

Eat more greens Yay…

I love this detergent. I put all my dishwater on my garden. this stuff hasn’t got any of the nasties in it that will bugger up the ph balance of my soil.. and it is cheap.. and lasts for ages.. etc etc. and it only smells a bit lemony..

When I build a new garden space, my first thoughts are for the frogs and lizards that I want to be in the garden with me. so I always try to create a habitat for them as well..

This will do for now. I will add to this later.. please check out Lotus post. and if you click here 🙂 🙂 :0you can check out what all the other bloggers have been doing..

cheers Kim and Thankyou xxxx

You’re doing a wonderful job! I love the greens and the habitat. Great idea reusing the dishwater…and the manure 🙂

  • BenefitScroungingScum February 12, 2008, 12:44 am

Wow. I’m both really impressed at your lifestyle and a lil bit ashamed of mine! BG x

Great photos make it seem so much easier somehow. I need to switch to a dishpan too. That’s a great idea. I’m making a list of all the good ideas and then going on a big errand spree today to get my supplies to make-over things. Thanks for sharing.

I know that y’all down under are having a REAL hard time with water and all. I hope that situation resolves itself, sooner rather than later. A big MWAH for you for being as green as you are – all the time.

It’s nice of you to include a habitat for frogs and lizards, but to me, it looks like a handy grocery store for snakes.

Wow. Very impressive. I always use the dirty pot or something for dishwater instead of filling up the sink but I don’t dump it on plants…I could, I guess, if I switch detergents.

    Very cool. and very green!

I love the tip to use the green soap and reuse the dishwater! I’m going to look into that!

And you are a smart lady with the horse manure! We are planning on composting when we finally figure out if we’re moving or not and I get to start a veg garden, yay!

Thanks so much for posting your way of helping the earth, and supporting the project, Kim! 🙂

Reduce, Reuse and Recycle thats the old pagan in me speaking. Too many people are out of touch with nature and it does not just the planet harm but their souls too.

Very cool Kim!! You rock! I don’t think we do near enough around my house and I need to get serious about how we are doing things. One thing I am committed to this month is coming up with bags to carry my groceries in – I’m working on that.

Hope you are having a good day – see you soon. Kellan

    I loved the post!

We use Earth Choice as well for dishwashing. We use the normal sink for dishes but only fill it a little bit then a separate container for rinsing dishes…then once the the water is cool it goes onto the garden. 🙂

I love your green lifestyle. I’m going to try that tub in the sink idea. I remember my mum doing it when I was tiny.I’m also going to make more of those tulle bags for my fruit and veg because the first ones I made are too small.

Great post! I love what you’re doing there, you have shared some great ideas there, although I think that horse manure would be a little bit difficult to find around here!

We recently moved into a home that had a small fish pond in the backyard, which was home to about 3 frogs. But I don’t know how many years this pond has been neglected or how many families of frogs have lived in it. The water was very gross (dark), with leaves in the bottom and a pinkish film in it (underneath the water!). My husband emptied the pond this winter, but some of the water got into the hole that the pond sat in. My question is: Do you think whatever was in the pond contaminated the soil? I wanted to start a vegetable garden near that spot this spring.
