Thanks for this video.
These cages have been banned or are being phased out in the UK, Sweden, Finland and the Netherlands (and, sadly, only 6 states of the USA).
I’m glad that ‘Animals Australia’ has put out their TV ad (‘You didn’t know, did you?’) and Jackie O has acted to educate Australians about the unethical treatment of pigs in factory farms. These, and the 60 Minutes exposé (22/11/09), must have at least got the Australian Pork Limited’s attention, as it updated its site – and, sadly, lies about the welfare status of pigs on Australian factory farms…. e.g. a ‘healthy pig is a better product’ and ‘pig farmers understand better than anyone the crucial importance of a high standard of care for each and every animal on their farm’. That “high standard” means factory farms house animals in an unnatural, inappropriate environment, absolutely devoid of enrichment and quality of life… Animal Welfare is secondary to Production Goals on factory farms.
NB: factory farming involves mutilations (tail docking, teeth clipping) carried out without pain relief, as Jackie says. Severely restricted movement means a high incidence of leg injuries, lameness, weakened bones and muscles, urinary tract infections and weakened hearts.
While we might be having fun eating meat, we are unaware of the sufferings that these animals went through. Sure, they would surely be taken into our tummy but they shouldn’t be treated cruelty before they die.
