In my ‘about me’ page, I write that I live on a small island underneath Australia. I don’t know what sort of image that conjures up for those of you arriving here from the bloggies.
So here is a map of Australia. Tasmania my island home, is the green bit at the bottom.
I live on a 5 acre bush block high in the hills, about an hours drive north from the capital city Hobart. My husband built our home, room by room from bush poles, recycled timber and bricks. After twenty years of constant building and renovations we are nearly finished.
As I am sitting here writing this and trying to think what to say next, I can hear yellow tailed black cockatoos squawking in the trees. A pair of green rosellas have landed on the balcony rails, looking to see if there is any wheat left over from the chook’s breakfast and a pair ofย fairy wrens are pecking at the insects trapped in the spiderwebs on the windows..
Of a nightime I can hear Tasmanian devils squabbling in the gully down the hill and brush tailed possums raid my fruit trees. I sometimes am lucky enough to catch glimpses of wallabies, in dawns early light. The tadpoles are just changing into froglets and as they emerge from the water my camera is always close to hand.
I am thrilled to bits to be a finalist for the best Australian and New Zealand weblog awards and I am very pleased that you are all here reading my words and looking at my photos.
Cheers Kim.

Beautiful pictures Kim! Almost as good as sitting there with you ๐
Am admiring your beautiful photos (and flags – Quintana roo, not jealous). Love your birdies.
Love the birds Kim.
Beautiful pictures. WOW! Wish we had birds that colourful here. (we probably do but I have never noticed them)
To live with nature .. you are the lucky one!!! Well done, hubby of yours .. to build a house pole by pole, brick by brick .. is his name Jack ? ๐
I love it!! I tried to pick a favorite picture, it was tough, probably the first. Green Rosellas. Stunning.
wow! good luck in your nomination!
It’s so good to see your pictures again.
Squee! Congratulations on making it to the finals, and thank you for the lovely photos and descriptions. I wasn’t very clear on where Tasmania is until now ๐

Love the pics, Kim. I’m so glad you’re getting this recognition. Your art shows an appreciation and respect for nature that is very different from what we’re reading about in the news. I’m not sure how I would categorize you if I were describing you to a friend except that you are an artist whose work is inspired by nature and that you live in Tasmania. But it doesn’t begin to describe you. ๐
Just when I think you can’t out do yourself photographically – then you go and take even more beautiful pictures than the last batch! WTG!
Just found your blog through the awards website, what a breath of fresh air to see these beautiful nature pics. Your shots are inspiring. I’m sitting here in an office in midtown Manhattan wishing I was there … and thinking about taking a visit to the bronx zoo with my camera ๐ So curious about life in Tasmania … do you both work from home? have neighbors? is it dangerous? do tell … and keep up the good work!
I arrived via the Bloggies. I live in San Diego. The only way I could see those birds or that roo would be to go to the zoo. I’ve got plenty of snails, though. Nice blog!
Lovely blog, great photos. Came here from Wanderlust, blame her.
I have added your blog to my Blogger’s Cafe:
http://avarchives.blogspot.com/ in Library 4 – nature Blogs. Pop across and have a peep. Did that votey thing for you too, deserved.

Good on ya, Kim!
I love that snail pic! And the other pics too, but the snail pic is my favourite today lol
Greetings from Poland, to Tasmania! (Hmmmm. Never thought I’d ever see myself writing THAT!).
Veronica kindly dropped into my blog, and I kindly returned the favour – and I saw your nomination. Congratulations! It’s my first visit here, so I’ll poke around a bit, see what’s what. But my first thought is, ‘Are those snails hugging?’
I love that snaily frog picture!
Lovely post, I feel like I’ve just popped in to visit. Shame I had to go home so soon.
Congratulations Kim!
Beautiful shots. I love the fact you have wildlife right outside your front door. That is so cool.
great description.
You ‘snailed’ it.
lol
Oh my gosh! Congratulations on your nomination! It was so nice to visit you today. My son loves animals so I am showing him all your pictures : ). He wants to see a tasmanian devil!
Found your blog from the Bloggies site. Love reading blogs from distant places. I am smack dab in the middle of the USA. An armchair traveler most of the time. Love your pictures1
Hi Kim! I found your blog via the bloggies site. I was voting for one of my favorite blogs: thepioneerwoman…and I thought I would check out some of the other nominees. Yours was the first one! I live in central Illinois in the U. S. I love photography so I am enjoying your pictures and the fact that I can visit you on the other side of the world! Thanks for letting me stop by! Good Luck on the bloggies!
greetings from los angeles! came here through the bloggies site. i join the others in saying ‘wow’ to your photos. can i trade you one of my crows for any of the colorful birds that land on your rail? would trade you a skunk for a tasmanian devil but we never actually see the skunks here, we just smell them…. good luck with the bloggies & i look forward to returning here for a small taste of your world. thanks for sharing!
LOVE LOVE LOVE the photo of the small frog on the snail. . . did I mention LOVE?!!
Tasmania is definitely a nice place. Im from Queensland (bit further north for those who dont know) and Tasmania reminds me of natural landscape that is yet still untouched.
I tell you what, after visiting Tasmania once, I’d love to go back again. Alas… my holiday had to end *sob* *sniffle* so now Im back at work again.
Keep up the good photos. They’re really interesting. Got any of cradle mountain?
