Dragon eggs

What colour do you think the dragon eggs should be? I was leaning towards bright colours. Not highly decorated like easter eggs which was my first thought but single colours, ranging from light blues and greens to reds and purples. Now I am not so sure, Veronica suggested light swirly pastels hmmm. I think I will nip over to Robin Hobb’s blog and ask her what colour she imagined her dragon eggs to be.

To answer Achelois there isn’t a shop at the sanctuary though I will be able to have a stall and sell my work there on the day. There will be stalls from groups like the Understorey Network and Weedbusters etc. I was a sensitive child as well  Achelois, now that you have reminded me of that, I am thinking about the dead albatross bowls from the perspective of a child and maybe they might be a bit too much. I will see.

The annual fundraising open day for the Chauncy Vale Wildlife Sanctuary is this Sunday the 14th of February. I will go down there and hand over my proposal. I will check out the age range of the visitors, see where they set up the stalls, just basically do a bit of light reconnaissance. I will come home and in order to get the ideas straight in my head I will write about it here and then I will start making. Yay.

Another point I need to keep in mind as I am working towards this event is the very real possibility that I could design a wonderful one off series of work especially to be viewed in situ and the whole day could be cancelled due to it being a day of total fire ban. Australian summers certainly keep you on your toes.

River and Mrs C also wondered whether my work would be safe  there. That is a risk I will have to take and one that I am comfortable with. The whole process of making ceramics is fraught from start to finish, there are so many things that can go wrong as you are making that I dont even worry about it any more. I just offer it all up to the universe and what will be will be.

I want people to be able to pick up my work and look at it closely so I will make the dragon eggs sturdy enough to be handled.I might even throw a couple of cracked ones into the nests as well.

Robin Hobb answered my question about her dragon’s eggs, I suspect that they’d be rather like turtle eggs, with shells more leathery than brittle. And camouflaged to blend in with the sand and protect them from predators.

Now I am thinking of leathery bands of texture on the eggs as well. Oh I am getting more excited about the dragon eggs than anything else. This year is going to be a good year but I will need to remember my key words, Focus and Resolution in order to take advantage of all the possibilites this year has to offer.

So tell me what you think about the colour and size of the dragon eggs, send me off on a zillion tangents with your suggestions. How would seeing a giant nest full of eggs make you feel? I have been hopeless answering my emails lately as well, sorry about that. I love reading them and I really mean to reply but I  am off with the faeries at the moment with my head full of dragons and dinosaurs and beautiful blue bowls and oh look at that cloud where’s my camera…

A bit unoriginal but fiery red and yellows and orange? Size? really large.

I think I need to drink my creative vitamins now. heheh.

  • Veronica February 10, 2010, 9:22 am

Gosh, I wish I could get my creative back. I think Dominos stole it.

  • Kristin February 10, 2010, 9:51 am

I think I’m being very literal here, but my first impression is bright green (thinking green dragons). When you mentioned leather I thought of dinosaur eggs, then dinosaur-type colors: browns, dull greens, or what I imagine dinosaurs looked like. I like Brenda’s suggestions too. Not very helpful, is it?

  • lceel February 10, 2010, 10:34 am

EVERYBODY knows that Dragon eggs are that weird kind of pale green that glows in the dark. Because Dragon eggs are radioactive – which is the source of their fire and power.

  • Mrs. Oh February 10, 2010, 11:22 am

I bought some Christmas balls on clearance and they so reminded me of what a dragon egg would look like. They were swirled with shades of green and gold. I would send you a pic if they weren’t packed away 😐

  • Jessica February 10, 2010, 12:56 pm

Yes on leather bands: snakeskin, stingray, ostrich type/looking

Even fish scales .. and fossils embedded in them, like little fish, just for a twist. Maybe just partials, or hints of.

Colors: hmmm, with ceramics – so many choices! Have you considered textures with underlying colors? I did a white “bead” glaze mask once with an underlying rust, red wash.
Turquoise, pearls, greens, deep violets, golden ochre, or more earthy colors in a flat glaze/ wash.

Have you considered pressing local flora into the clay before firing? It might give it a little taste of the preserve.
I’ve done that with some of the ferns and vines before. Even some of the more distinct leaves.

    OK, I’ll stop now.

    • frogpondsrock February 10, 2010, 4:29 pm

@Jessica A friend experimented with different beading glazes last year that were really interesting. I made a sort of shiny crawling shino by mistake last year as well that could be interesting as well. You have also got me thinking about fossils. *squee*

  • Mrs. C February 10, 2010, 1:35 pm

lceel’s idea is awesome… maybe a metallicy green and some sort of speckles/flecks of colour through them or even a swirl of colour/ sparkle that you don’t notice until you get very close/put up to light.

I think a dragon should be emerging from one!! Can you do it?

PS thank you for link love!

    • frogpondsrock February 10, 2010, 4:25 pm

The ideas are whizzling around my head at a zillion miles an hour. Thankyou very much everyone. I am thinking of a totally mixed bag of assorted eggs now lol. Some that look like fossils with the beautiful orange blush from being woodfired. A lovely sparkly copper green done in oxidation. Then there is a crawling shino in reduction that I was playing around with last year that would give me layers and depth. OOH and the pretty pastels done with slip. I am very very excited here. Thankyou

  • river February 10, 2010, 4:16 pm

Oooh! The metallicy green with speckles and flecks of colour/sparkle sounds fabulous. FABULOUS. As does Jessica’s colour ideas. (I’ve no idea what dragon eggs look like, I’ll be googling after I leave here.) I think a couple of cracked ones would look great too, like they were about to hatch, think how excited kids would be to see that!. I’m looking forward to seeing photos of them, especially once they’re in place on the walk.

  • Sharon February 10, 2010, 7:18 pm

I always think of the glow of the tiny dragon inside the egg – can you make a dragon shape under the surface glaze? Love the texture ideas too. Your poor brain must be ready to explode with all these ideas scrambling around in there for attention Kim 😉

  • Barbara February 10, 2010, 9:26 pm

Big enough to have to hold in both hands. Maybe the size of rugby ball even? Colours, I would think greens, browns, reds, oranges, and definitely leathery texture. So, nothing new from me then!

  • Tanya February 10, 2010, 11:31 pm

I think I’ve missed something. Dragon Eggs?

    Cool.

Would love to see photos 🙂

  • lilacspecs February 11, 2010, 6:43 am

The size of ostrich eggs, and hard and shiny and polished, like dragon scales. I imagine them to be all sorts of jewel tones.

  • Jayne February 11, 2010, 8:39 am

Iridescent greens, blues and red shades, all swirled together with a pattern on the shell made from a textured material (like sequins, buttons, shells) all over the outside.

  • Achelois February 11, 2010, 10:28 am

Blank mind on this but was much impressed with iceels suggestion. At the end of the day I feel your creative juices will flow and that will be the right thing in the end.

  • bobbie February 11, 2010, 11:28 am

Yellow with Streaks (the Dragon Eggs) With the clay firing yellowish (not glazed) or glazed. I don’t know if you are firing with electric or gas or?

Roll a ball of clay…dry it…wrap it up on a little piece of paper. Put it in the hollow of the Dragon Egg. Then, after it is fired, the sound will give the egg some mysterious aura. What’s in the egg? The tiny dragon? Experiment with the size of the clay ball inside. The sounds will vary.

  • Jientje February 11, 2010, 7:44 pm

There are so many lovely ideas in the comments my head spins! You could paint fire on them? Hmm? Nah, all the other ideas are much better!!!
It’s going to be very interesting to follow this new project of yours!
I’m glad your creative juices are flowing again!

  • Hyphen Mama February 12, 2010, 7:03 am

When you talk about them, I really am seeing light blues and greens. But for the sake of EYE CATCHING maybe more vivid colors would be more appropriate? Size… maybe the size of your 2 fists together– like when we were kids and our teacher told us that was how large our brain is (sheesh, I hope my brain is bigger than that…now that I take a look at how small that is). Like the size of an eggplant?

  • Kelley @ Magnetoboldtoo February 12, 2010, 11:46 am

    Sparkly and covered with glitter.

Wait, that would be unicorn eggs. Or not.

Now I want to go and buy some pretty sparkly shoes.

    I am so helpful.

  • janet February 12, 2010, 1:16 pm

Your other question… seeing a giant nest full of dragon eggs would make me feel like I had entered another world. Magical for kids. I like jewel tones, or the soft green of your bottles and snails. What a wealth of ideas from everywhere.

  • Kristin February 13, 2010, 3:02 am

I like your header. I wouldn’t change it.

  • Watershedd February 13, 2010, 6:00 pm

It’s a while since I read the three trilogies by Robin Hobb and I’ve not allowed myself to read her latest series … I get too antsy waiting fto know what happens next in her books. I can’t put them down ( a rarity for me)! Now, with writing the text and the GOFA’s exploits I have simply don’t have time. Perhaps at the end of the year. What a luxury!

I agree with Hobb, that the eggs would blend with the environment to camouflage and protect them, but that would not just be earthy tones. The greens of the trees, the russets of the soils, the whites of the snows, yellows of the sand. Perhaps your eggs could be camouflaged according to the region in which they are laid of the sub-specie or even the sex.Nests of eggs could blend in similar tones. If you picked up a dragon egg laid under the sea or in a lake, it could be blues. Have fun imagining!

    Kim,
Today’s “A Photo a day from Planet Earth” for 2/22 has a neat picture of a found egg, called “wish egg”,and it’s from Australia, too. Nice colors and textures. Hope you’re having fun with the project!
