I am one of the speakers on the My Blog My Story panel at the Australian blogging conference, this Saturday.
I have been thinking about this speech for the past twelve months and I was reasonably confident about my ability to produce a cohesive and interesting talk. After all, the title of the panel is “My Blog My Story” and I would be a poor excuse for a storyteller if I couldnt manage to croak out my own story.
The problem I am facing my dear bloglings, is that the story I was going to tell is about fourteen minutes long and I only have eight minutes up on stage. I need to condense the buggery out of my talk in order to make sure we have a beginning a middle and an end.
I reckon I will have time to cover five points briefly, or three points in a bit more depth but trying to decide which are the salient points to leave in, is proving a bit difficult.
So this is where you come in my dear internetz, if you were forced to sit through eight minutes of “This is my blogging life with Kimmy” what would you like to hear?

I’m really sorry but I’m going to be no help here at all. Eight minutes is nowhere near enough time to listen to you. I’d need a few hours, at least, with probably a re-visit the next day to just cover a few more things.
Good luck, but I know you’ll be fine on the day. xxx
8 minutes? Nobody that starts a blog has that little to say. Maybe tell them that, because obviously somebody has no concept of what blogging is.
I guess tell them who you are, why you are, and why you blog. Somehow squish that into 8 minutes, like condensed milk.
Your life in a sardine can.
Hm. Why or how you started blogging I think is important. Has the purpose of your blog altered over time and why? Choosing how much to reveal, what to keep private. Lessons you’ve learned along the way.
Does that help?
Oh, and most important, why you continue to blog; what it does for you.
You will rock it Kimmy. You can have my eight minutes if you like 😉
I want to hear about why you started blogging and how your blogging has changed over the years.
I wish I could be there to hear you! *sigh*
Wish I could be there as well! One day! 🙂 4 topics: your family, your art, your environmental beliefs and how you wrap those up into your blog that leaves your avid readers yearning for more. Love you – you will do an excellent job!
We are all nekkid in the audience, right?
RIGHT?
Wait…some of us might want to wear paperbags…
So, tell us about how your blog is your voice, your outlet, how in another era you’d have been a devoted diary/journal/scrapbook writer but in the 21st century it’s blogging, etc 😉
Talk about when you first started on the computer and you and V were arguing about how to use it beause she was showing you too quickly or something! That was in one of your posts, I laughed so hard!
All my thoughts on this have already been voiced by the previous commenters but I’m sure you’ll be fine. Just make you make and post a recording so that the rest of us can hear you too! Please, pretty please 😉
opps – make SURE you make etc . . .
I have no idea what you should say, Tanya’s suggestion would start things off with a laugh. Then just go from there.
If it was me, you’d be hearing 8 minutes of ummm, err, I’m not sure what to say here, how should I start? ummm……
What drives your passion. Whatever the topic, and whether it be a blog or some of the tweets I’ve seen you are fiercely passionate. How that drives what you do, or, rather what excites your passion. You wouldn’t keep going otherwise 🙂
I find the phrase ‘brief and succinct’ to be my worst of my enemies at times – now I have to shorten a long speech for next week in one of my arts classes… busy weekend :p

I always consider the 3-point topic useful for me. I’ve found 3 is a good number. Not sure about it though when it comes to recounting something though, but best of luck! 🙂
Well you cannot possibly say what you want in that time – and the audience doesn’t care much what you say – they will want to listen to anything you say. Pick a couple of things that are important to you and tell them about your passion. They will get the message. They all read your blog anyway.
I want to hear what you have to say about advertising Froggy and the responsibilty bloggers have to their readers. I also am very interested in your art. You have a powerful voice, use it wisely and enjoy your eight minutes.
I wish I could be there. I’m sure you’ll make the audience relax and laugh with at least one funny story. Leave a little room to elaborate on a part of your talk that gets big response. It’s hard to know that in advance, though. Maybe something about being fearless, or about your expanding web of friendships. I always enjoy your mother/daughter/granddaughter thoughts. And I especially love your environmental art. The eight minutes will fly by. Have fun!
Just do the fourteen minutes until they tell you to stop.
You’re going to be fantastic. I’m pretty sure that the warmth and humour (and down right fabulousness) you share with everyone here will come across no matter what you say! I can’t wait to hear how it all goes.
xx
You’ll be fabulous. Remember the KISS technique plus be bight, be brief, be gone … leave them wanting more.
More of your fashion tips please, Kim! And as I’m always eager to hear talk of Tasmania, I’d love to know about your favourite place – apart from your home and immediate surroundings – and why it’s your favourite . But that’s probably not blog related enough.
